TUESDAY OCTOBER 22 ~ 7-9PM
A Mahayana Buddhist Memorial Service Honoring Transgender Day of Remembrance
Each year, members and friends of the transgender community gather to mourn the previous year’s victims of violence by reciting their names out loud. Last year, Open Gate Zendo, a Chan Buddhist temple in Olympia, offered a traditional Buddhist memorial service in honor of Transgender Day of Remembrance.
Come and experience an abbreviated version of the full service in advance of the Day of Remembrance itself. Bring the names of any of the past year’s deceased in your own life. We will mourn them along with the transgender community’s dead.
All are welcome and encouraged to participate in this event, whether or not you consider yourself to be Buddhist. This service is offered to help all of us find freedom from suffering together – no exceptions.
THIS EVENT IS FREE. JUST TURN UP OR RSVP ABOVE IF YOU CAN.
Shih Yincheng ~ Assistant Priest at the Open Gate Zendo
Shih Yincheng is a bhikshuni (Buddhist nun) currently serving as assistant priest at Open Gate Zendo, a Chan Buddhist temple in Olympia. She also volunteers with a Washington state prison Buddhist group and enjoys drinking tea and spending time in the woods.
The venue at the Old Olympia Glass Building is accessible from the street on the ground floor with no stairs. There are no accessible toilets on-site, so we do suggest you use other local locations and facilities where possible.
