We all have lots of stuff! We are more recently starting to consider if we should leave it all behind for someone else to have to sort through or start cleaning and clearing now to minimize their efforts? Swedish Death Cleaning is rising in popularity. Decluttering your house now seems a ‘kinder’ thing to do.
Alongside this, we have norms and rituals and expectations that the more ‘precious’ things will be passed down in the family. Passed by the passed?
In recent generations, vintage china is a common thing to be passed down. My own parents collect vintage cups and saucers and teapots. We’ve already had the discussion about which ones I might ‘inherit’. The rest my sisters will probably gift to the thrift store in the UK. My mom’s collections will once again be dispersed.
Sad but true.
Which of your collections will be ‘passed’ down and which will be dispersed? Do your family and friends know which items are meaningful to you? Does it matter to us as humans that we leave some meaningfulness behind?

This is an often unspoken reality about death. When our parents die, we may inherit special things but we also have to go through all their everyday items too.
How much stuff will you leave for your family and friends to have to go through?
