Memorialization is one of the oldest human traditions that spans most cultures around the world. Creating spaces to remember the absence or presence of someone we know helps us grieve, acknowledge,
and share their story within our wider community.
In creating our event space in Olympia in October 2024, we didn’t feel we should leave out the opportunity for everyone to share in this tradition to bring into the space the loved ones you remember.
Attendees brought a small photo of their loved one to add to the memorial or wrote their name on a ribbon and tied it to the wire.
The idea for this memorial was inspired by my visit to the Crossbones graveyard in Southwark, London, which was a graveyard for the outcasts, particularly the prostitutes and paupers of Medieval England (see photos in black frames). Although some bodies were moved, some remain, and the community garden built on top now remains as a focal point within these busy London streets for modern-day people to remember and memorialize their own loved ones.
